Oral Hygiene

At O’Kane and Monssen, we understand the profound impact that oral health has on protecting your teeth and supporting your overall well-being. Dental hygiene is the cornerstone of maintaining a radiant smile, maintaining good health and preventing disease.

WHAT IS ORAL HYGIENE?

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping your mouth clean and disease-free. It means brushing and flossing teeth at least twice daily to remove food debris and dental plaque, a colorless film of bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. We recommend dental office visits twice a year for doctor exams and professional cleanings with our dedicated team of skilled hygienists.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD ORAL HYGIENE

Your smile is more than just a reflection of your personality – it’s a window into your overall health. Good oral hygiene is essential for healthy teeth and gums. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities, gum disease, tooth loss and many other serious health concerns. As the gateway to the body, the mouth can also provide early insight into other health conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY ORAL HEALTH?

To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, including before bedtime.

  • Brush for at least two minutes, covering all tooth surfaces with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.

  • Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between teeth.

  • Eat a healthy diet and limit sugary food and drinks.

  • Drink plenty of water to help maintain saliva production, which aids in preventing tooth decay.

  • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. Professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing may miss.

  • Avoid tobacco use.

  • Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports to prevent dental injuries.

  • Try to manage stress, which can contribute to teeth grinding and jaw clenching.
